Detailed Event Overview

Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women worldwide, with more than 600,000 new cases and more than 340,000 deaths estimated in 2020.

Unlike the majority of cancers, the main cause of cervical cancer is well known with almost all cases caused by the Human PapillomaVirus (HPV), which infects most men and women at some point in their lives. When HPV infection persists, normal cells change into abnormal cells–it could take as many as 10-15 years for these cells to become cancerous, although in some women this change may happen faster. HPV may persist in our body without any symptoms until it has developed into cervical cancer.

Cervical cancer screening involves testing for HPV infection to detect pre-cancer and cancer, followed by treatment as appropriate. Testing is done among women who have no symptoms and may feel perfectly healthy. When screening detects an HPV infection or pre-cancerous lesions, these can easily be treated and cancer can be avoided. Screening can also detect cancer at an early stage where treatment has a high potential for cure.

Better cervical health starts with you so take control of your cervical health by learning about HPV, cervical cancer risk factors, your cervical cancer screening options, and what to do once you have been screened for HPV.
